Residential Student Accommodation – Sir Thomas Building

SDA Architecture have recently been commissioned to prepare contemporary designs to convert an existing office building in the heart of Liverpool city centre into luxury student apartments. Sir Thomas Building is located within the World Heritage Site and set within Conservation area of Liverpool.

Sir Thomas Building is currently occupied by commerical offices, which unfortunately as a result has meant that the interior architecture of the building has somewhat lost its unique identity, however, as part of our appointment SDA has designed interiors that are respectful of the original fabric of the building and enhance the strong identity of the existing industrial architectural features.

The blend of contemporary design and the blend of raw and bespoke interior design creates a feeling of urban luxury. With the inclusion of its own cutting edge gymnasium and cinema this student accommodation is setting new levels of end users function and enjoyment.

With 44 new student apartments that include individual suites comprising of open plan kitchen and dining space, bathroom, study, dressing room and bedroom. Due to shape and form of the existing building we had to develop a linear floor plan that allowed design and function to blend seamlessly to enable the apartments to be both private and social.

The interconnecting floor plan design intelligently organises spaces from social entry kitchen and dining spaces through to ensuite bathrooms located central to the plan form allowing guest to use the WC space without encroaching the private bedroom accommodation and equally allowing the student occupier close private links to the ensuite when using the more private bedroom and study spaces.

Sliding space saving pocket doors have been introduced into the design development to allow spaces to be closed off or opened up to all alternative dimensions of living spaces when entertaining.

The development should be ready for the students arriving in Autumn 2017.
