Pavilion House is a single storey contemporary private residence set within the Green Belt, that truly embraces contemporary residential architecture. With the existing site being classified as ‘equestrian’ and having the built form of single storey stables already present it was important for us to develop a design that was in keeping and represented the built form of the existing stables. With this we embarked on designing a single storey home that maintained the height of the stables and also maintained the volume.
This project is a rare occasional whereby we have been given the freedom of developing the project brief, the list of room requirements, which allowed us complete freedom to create a home that encompassed modernism and simple lines of the stable but enhanced the site in architectural terms.
The concept design involved developing floor plans that allowed simple interaction between the proposed home and the landscape, with the new home being restricted to only 4.5m in width we wanted to design a home that had transparency and views from every space. Glazing was a key design consideration to allow maximum daylight but manage solar gains throughout the sun path cycle. Early within the design process we decided on developing a design that allowed the fabric of the building to be appreciated fully which led to design the core structure out of oak beams that would be left visible and provide great interior architecture value and drama.
With the site setting it was decided that we wanted an overtone of privacy on approach to the dwelling that allowed subtle visual glimpses of the internal English courtyard scented gardens, we feel this approach to privacy was a requirement due to transparency of the home once you had entered. The landscape and weather plays an enormous part in architecture and the enjoyment of spaces and because of this we wanted the home to have a raw but warm feel providing the clients with an appreciation of the seasons and the overwhelming element of protection against the weather and its extremities.
This project is currently being prepared to be shortlisted for the Northern Design Awards 2016 in two categories Best Residential Concept and Best Luxury Residential Home, we are looking forward to seeing if ‘Pavilion House’ is successful.
