Period features never go out of fashion, they provide a sense of opulence and grandeur. The difficulty lies in making a new scheme look like it has always been there. This particular client had bought an old house and all the period features had been removed, as was the trend in the 1970’s.
This interior design project involved sympathetically recreating a traditional hallway, stairs and landing interior scheme that would reflect the period of the property while still providing a modern feel and welcoming space. The scheme included replacement hardwood windows with a Georgian bar detailing, reclaimed Sapelle hardwood parquet flooring, and new plaster coving details, a reclaimed new front door and hardware, a feature circle window and new hardwood wall panelling in a style to match the original staircase of the property.
The rich colours on the reclaimed flooring, panelling and walls were chosen to add warmth and depth to the area and create consistency between the first and ground floor levels. The bright white of the staircase was chosen to make it stand out as a feature of the space and draw the eye to the beautiful solid hardwood bannister.
The hallway is highlighted by industrial pendant lights finished in matt black to the ground floor which are enhanced with Edison bulbs to add a fun contemporary twist to the lighting design. Overall the scheme works and looks fresh whilst maintaining the illusion that is has always been a part of the original home.Contact Us
